SFK Welcomes New Members of Batch 2022

March 10, 2023

SFK welcomes the admission of three (3) elementary students from a public school in Quezon City. They are Liezel Jane Abrea, Mary Jane Amangyan, and Miyuki Lagadia. Liezel Jane was 8 years old and a third grade student at Commonwealth Elementary School when she was admitted to the program. While Mary Jane and Miyuki were both sixth graders in the same school. All three students were very fortunate to have been referred by the school guidance counselor for the SFK scholarship.

Prior to admission, these students underwent academic screening, family background check and assessment conducted both by the school administration and the foundations’ social worker and screening committee. Once they passed the scholarship requirement, their application is duly approved by the President. The students are formally welcomed during their first monthly meeting attendance to meet the members of the board and their co-scholars. They are also introduced to the foundations’ program and services in an orientation activity.

In the year 2020 and 2021, the foundation’s social worker, Ms. Raquel Abaloyan, was not able to conduct recruitment of scholars primarily because schools were closed during those years. It was only in the year 2022 that the foundation was able to take in three new scholars. The onset of the pandemic brought a lot of challenges to the foundation’s program to support the educational needs of children and the youth. One by one, difficulties were addressed by the Board of Trustees. Other than raising more funds for the program and maintaining the smooth operation of the Foundation, the challenge of recruiting qualified scholars also limits the number of beneficiaries served by the foundation. It is imperative to find qualified students to replace slots vacated by the “graduate” scholars as soon as possible in order to maintain the ideal population of recipients.

The foundation hopes to be able to grant more scholarships to eligible students by launching a nationwide fundraising campaign, a project intended to obtain additional funding for the educational needs of the children and the youth the foundation supports.
